Taste Atlas, an experiential travel online guide, has recently unveiled a list of the ‘Top 150 Most Legendary Restaurants in the World’, promising a one-of-a-kind gastronomic adventure that is truly deserving of experiencing at least once in your lifetime. According to the guide, these food joints “are not just places to grab a meal but destinations in their own right, comparable to the world’s most famous museums, galleries and monuments.”
Figlmüller in Vienna, Austria, which ‘has earned its reputation by specialising in a single dish – the Schnitzel Wiener Art – for over a century’, is named the most legendary restaurant in the world. It is followed by Katz’s Delicatessen in New York City, USA, and Warung Mak Beng in Sanur, Indonesia, in second and third positions respectively.

Much to the delight of the culinary enthusiasts in the country, seven Indian restaurants have made it to the list of the 150 most legendary restaurants in the world. Kozhikode‘s historic Paragon restaurant has been named the 11th most legendary restaurant in the world, with biryani being termed its “most iconic dish”.
“Paragon in Kozhikode, Kerala, is an emblem of the region’s rich gastronomic history, celebrated for its mastery of traditional Malabar cuisine. The dish that reigns supreme is the biryani, a blend of rice, meat, and spices, steeped in age-old traditions and prepared with locally sourced ingredients,” the guide said.

Established in 1939, Paragon is renowned for its enduring charm, creating an inviting atmosphere that perfectly complements the meticulous preparation of dishes. The restaurant takes pride in showcasing local produce and employing traditional cooking methods, resulting in a culinary experience that truly celebrates the essence of its surroundings.
The 12th spot is occupied by Tunday Kababi in Lucknow which is immensely popular for its Mughlai cuisine. “The star offering, the galouti kebab, is a culinary masterpiece featuring finely minced meat tenderized with raw papaya and an assortment of spices. Its distinctive taste profile and the legacy behind its creation have garnered Tunday Kababi a devoted following, both domestically and internationally,” according to Taste Atlas.
Peter Cat in Kolkata, Amrik Sukhdev Dhaba in Murthal, Mavali Tiffin Rooms in Bangalore, Karim’s in Delhi, and Ram Ashraya in Mumbai have been ranked 17th, 23rd, 39th, 87th, and 112th, respectively.
From small, family-run eateries to esteemed Michelin-starred establishments, the list features varied restaurants that all share a commitment to culinary authenticity. “These are establishments that have remained relevant and highly regarded in an ever-changing culinary landscape. Our list celebrates these enduring icons of gastronomy, the restaurants that prioritise substance over the show, serving honest, no-nonsense food that is simply delectable,” the food and travel guide said.
