Eggs are a universal staple, loved across cultures for their versatility and rich nutritional profile. In India, eggs take on a flavourful desi twist, with dishes like masala omelette and egg bhurji gracing breakfast tables and full-course meals alike.

Recently, TasteAtlas, a globally recognised food and travel guide, honoured India’s masala omelette by ranking it 22nd among the world’s top egg dishes. This places the dish alongside some of the most iconic egg preparations, including Japan’s Tamago Sando and France’s Quiche Lorraine.

Topping the list is Ajitsuke Tamago, Japan’s soft-boiled, marinated ramen egg, which is known for its umami-rich flavour and delicate texture. Following closely behind is the Filipino dish Tortang Talong, a grilled eggplant omelette, while Greece’s Staka me Ayga, a creamy dish made with eggs and staka butter, takes third place.

A flavourful combination of beaten eggs, onions, tomatoes, green chillies, and a mix of Indian spices, masala omelette offers a perfect blend of heat and richness, making it a favourite in Indian homes and street food culture. But does it hold up nutritionally? We asked an expert.

Nutritional benefits of masala omelette

Beyond its delicious taste, the masala omelette also packs a punch nutritionally. Consultant dietitian and diabetes educator Kanikka Malhotra said its high protein content, helps in muscle building, satiety, and blood sugar regulation. She broke down its benefits:

🔹 Protein Power: A masala omelette typically provides 13-24 grams of protein, making it an excellent choice for those looking to stay full longer and support muscle growth.
🔹 Rich in Iron & Potassium: These minerals are essential for maintaining healthy red blood cells and balancing fluids in the body.
🔹 Great for Blood Sugar Control: Thanks to its low-carb, high-protein composition, masala omelette can help in maintaining steady glucose levels.

Can you eat masala omelette every day?

Malhotra says, “Think of it as a delicious part of a balanced diet, rather than the only thing you eat! Maybe mix it up with some other healthy choices throughout the week.”

While masala omelette is undeniably nutritious, consuming it every single day comes with both benefits and potential drawbacks, Malhotra warned.

✅ Pros:
✔ Consistent protein intake for muscle health and energy.
✔ Essential nutrients like iron and potassium for overall well-being.
✔ Low in refined carbs, making it a good choice for diabetics and weight-watchers.

⚠ Cons:
❌ Depending on preparation, it can be high in fat and cholesterol. Adding excessive oil or butter may contribute to higher calorie intake.
❌ Too much cholesterol from eggs might not be ideal for those with pre-existing heart conditions.
❌ Eating the same food daily may lead to a nutritional imbalance—variety is key!

For optimal health, experts recommend moderation. Instead of daily consumption, incorporating a mix of protein sources (like lentils, cottage cheese, and nuts) can keep your diet balanced.
