Most of us are aware that meat products — if not washed properly before consumption — can lead to an onslaught of diseases. But, did you know that not washing your fruits properly can also be the culprit of a nasty bout of diarrhoea?

Dr Eileen Canday, Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics department, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, stresses the importance of following proper hygiene and cleaning your fruits well before eating them. According to her, not washing your fruits properly can lead to Salmonella or E.coli.

Here are some ways you can wash your fresh fruits properly to get rid of disease-causing organisms.

Always rinse fruits under running water

Dr Canday strongly advises against using soap, detergent, bleach solutions or any other disinfecting products on fruits and vegetables. She suggests only using running water to wash your fruits as “germs on the peel or skin can get inside fruits and vegetables when you cut them.”

Brush off the firm-skinned fruits while using gentle friction with soft ones

Scrub the firm-skinned fruits, like apples, lemons, pears, guavas, etc, as you would the dead skin on your feet. Dr Canday recommends using “a clean, soft bristle to better remove residues from their pores under running water.”

Absolutely do not repeat this process with fruits such as berries, cherries, peaches and other types of soft produce that are more likely to fall apart. Dr Canday said, “They can be cleaned with a steady stream of water and gentle friction using your fingers to remove grit.”

Don’t forget to dry your produce after rinsing

If you don’t want your freshly-washed fruits to be infected with bacteriadry them thoroughly using a clean paper or cloth towel.

Dr Canday recommends laying out your fragile produce on the towel to be “gently patted or rolled around to dry them without damaging them.”

Do not wash the fruits you don’t plan to consume immediately

According to Dr Canday, “fruits to be eaten for later should not be washed and then stored since this produces a favourable environment for bacterial growth.”
