Despite the scorching heat it is synonymous with, summer is impatiently awaited in India as it is also the season for our favourite fruit — mango — in all its avatars. According to the National Horticulture Board, about 1,500 varieties of mangoes are grown in India, including 1,000 commercial types. While trying all of them is difficult, Dr Philipp Ackermann, the German Ambassador to India and Bhutan, did try a few of them and shared his experience on social media.
Alongside the video, he wrote on Twitter, “यह ‘आम’ हैं बहुत ख़ास 😊। Mango 🥭 season is on!”

Since I first set foot in India, I have been fascinated by the crazy variety in look, feel & taste!
Had a first tasting with my colleagues from the residence, and tried Sindoori, Kesar & Malgoa mangoes.

He shared that ever since he first arrived in India, he has been fascinated by the varied variety of mangoes — in look, feel, and taste. “Had a first tasting with my colleagues from the residence, and tried Sindoori, Kesar, and Malgoa mangoes,” Dr Ackermann added.
While acknowledging the heat, he added, “But, what is very nice about this time of the year is that the mango season is in full bloom now. What I am going to learn about is the enormous variety of this fruit available in India.”
He first tasted the Kesar mango from Gujarat. “Very fresh. It is a little lemony. It is sweet but a little lemony,” Dr Ackermann said.
Next, he tried the Malgoa mango from the south and said it was “completely different” from the previous one. “It is much smoother, much softer” than the Kesar variety. Looking at the Sindoori mango, the envoy said it’s “beautiful and has rosy cheeks”.
Concluding, Dr Ackermann said that they will now walk through the mango season and see other varieties next time. “A long way to go,” he concluded.
For the unversed, kesar mango is grown in the foothills of Girnar in Gujarat. Known for its bright orange-coloured pulp, it was given the geographical indication status in 2011. Malgoa mango, on the other hand, is grown in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and other parts of South India. Incredibly juicy and fragrant, it is considered one of the best mangoes. Sindoori mango is also a popular variety in Tamil Nadu and is super sweet in taste.
