We pay attention to what we eat, apply to our skin or hair, and also any new symptoms that may warrant a health check-up. But have you ever paid attention to the colour of your stove flame?
Viren Salot, a content creator, shared that the colour of the stove flame can indicate different things. “If the flame is blue, this means that the combustion is effective, as the gas and oxygen mix well. If the flame is red or orange, this indicates that the combustion is incomplete, which may lead to increased gas consumption, blackening of the pan, delayed heating, and accumulation of dangerous gases,” Salot shared.
Chef Shipra Khanna agreed and added that the colour of the stove flame is, indeed, a key indicator of how efficiently your stove is functioning and whether it’s safe to use.
“A blue flame indicates proper combustion, meaning your stove is burning fuel efficiently with the right air-to-gas ratio,” said Khanna.
Why it matters: Efficient combustion minimises energy waste and reduces the emission of harmful gases like carbon monoxide.
A yellow or orange flame suggests incomplete combustion due to insufficient oxygen or dirt blocking the burners.
Why it matters: Higher fuel costs: Incomplete combustion wastes fuel. “It can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless gas that is harmful when inhaled,” said Khanna, adding that soot buildup can stain cookware and reduce the lifespan of appliance.
According to Khanna, this could indicate low gas pressure, blockages, or a malfunctioning regulator. “Weak flames may not generate enough heat and could signal an underlying issue that needs repair,” shared Khanna.
What it means: Contaminants in the fuel or dirt on the burners can cause unusual flame colours.
Why it matters: It’s a sign that the gas supply or stove needs cleaning or maintenance.

*Clean the burners: Regularly remove food debris or grease buildup to ensure proper airflow.
*Check the gas supply: Make sure the gas valve is fully open and the supply is consistent.
*Service the stove: Call a professional if the flame colour persists as anything other than blue, or if you notice an odd smell or weak flame.
“A blue flame ensures safety, efficiency, and clean cooking, while other colours might point to issues that need immediate attention. It is necessary to open doors and windows and ensure good ventilation during cooking,” said Khanna.
