By being mindful of what you eat, you can prevent gout flares, alleviate pain, and enhance your mobility, experts suggest. For the unversed, gout is a type of arthritis that causes swelling and pain in joints due to excessive accumulation of uric acid in the blood.
According to chemist Dan Gubler, several studies have found that vitamin C can help reduce gout. “Red bell pepper contains the most vitamin C among all foods. It contains more vitamin C than orange juice, oranges, kiwi, grapefruit etc,” said Gubler in a video on Instagram.
So, is red bell pepper a good way to tackle gout?
Red bell peppers, along with many other vegetables, have a low purine content, making them safe for individuals with gout. Purines are compounds that break down into uric acid in the body. “Not only are they safe, but red bell peppers also possess anti-inflammatory properties and are packed with vitamins and antioxidants, making them a healthy choice for most people, including those with gout,” said Suvarna Hebbar, coordinator of the programme, clinical nutrition and dietetics, Manipal College of Health Professions, MAHE, Manipal.

Experts elucidate that including a generous number of vegetables like kailan, cabbage, squash, red bell pepper, and beetroot in your diet is beneficial. “However, it’s important to limit your intake of vegetables with a moderate purine content, such as asparagus, spinach, cauliflower, and mushrooms,” said Hebbar.

Certain foods that are high in purine content can trigger gout attacks or worsen the condition.
Nevertheless, it’s crucial to maintain a well-balanced diet and seek guidance from a healthcare professional or registered dietitian, particularly if you have specific dietary concerns related to gout. “They can offer personalised advice based on your overall health, medical history, and the severity of your gout symptoms,” said Hebbar.
Additionally, staying hydrated, moderating alcohol consumption, and managing your weight are important lifestyle factors that can contribute to effectively managing gout symptoms, the expert concluded.
