A Honey Blonde Ale and The Betel Juice: New beer alert in Mumbai and Bangalore

Mumbai’s The White Owl is out with the Bumble, while Arbor Brewing Company’s lemongrass- and betel-leaf inspired collab brew sounds pretty interesting.

The White Owl Brewery is getting you ready for summer. They’ve just brewed Bumble, a Honey Blonde ale, and Spark, a Belgian wheat beer with a dash of citrus. Honey Blondes are light, refreshing and pretty uncomplicated, and, needless to say, great for summer. Spark, on the other hand, is a proper Belgian Wit that, too, goes extremely well with warm evenings. Belgian wheat beers are typically fruity and citrusy, and make great use of orange peels etc. The range of beers available at White Owl include Shadow, an English Porter, Torpedo, a punchy American Pale Ale and, among others, Ace, a French Apple Cider (with mild apple champagne flavours).

Meanwhile, Bangalore’s Arbor Brewing Company, India’s first American craft brewpub, recently launched the Betel Juice. The Betel Juice is a collab brew, which is what you call a beer that is jointly brewed by a brewpub and informed beer enthusiasts (in this case, members of the Bangalore Brew Crew). The Betel Juice is Bangalore’s first collaboration brew, and the southern city is slightly late to the party considering both Mumbai and Pune have had some pretty good collab brews being served across the two cities. The Kaapi Stout, co-created by Mumbai-based Gateway Brewing Company and home brewer Prateek Bavishi, has been well-received, while Pune’s most recent collab brew contribution was the Effingut, a jaggery pale ale.

According to beer evangelist John J Eapen, who was among those who helped with the brewing, Betel Juice is a “light to medium bodied ale that starts out with aromas and flavour of lemongrass and citrus and slowly transitions to a lingering dry betel-leaf finish.”
