Have you been running low on energy lately? The changing seasons, a sedentary lifestyle, stress and workload are all contributors to this prevailing energy crisis. And that extra cup of coffee can only give you momentary relief. So what should you do to perk yourself up and give your energy levels a huge boost? Here are some interesting things that you can try.

Listen to music

Turn up the volume — the louder, the better. Play some of your favourites if you find yourself dozing off during the day. Music is a great way to bring you back in the game. According to a study published in the International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology, loud music is effective in boosting your energy and improving the mental state.

Wash your face

This is the quickest and easiest way to get back your energy. Take a break from whatever you are doing and wash your face with cold water, to get an instant inflow of energy. In fact, according to a study published in the journal Clinical Neurophysiology, this activity is more effective than gulping down a cup of coffee.

Take a walk

Sitting on your chair all day can rob you of your energy. So, whenever you feel like you need a boost, go out and take a walk, especially if you are feeling cranky. Walking can clear your head, take your stress levels down, and make you feel happier and lighter. A recent study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity suggests that decrease the levels of fatigue and reduce food cravings.

Wear shades with an orange tint

Especially right before bedtime, when you are trying to squeeze in one more episode of your favourite show on Netflix. It is said that the blue light of the television and smartphone screens interfere with the body’s ability to secrete melatonin — the sleep hormone. To counter this and get a good night’s sleep, switch to the ‘night mode’ on your phone and wear a pair of glasses that have an orange tint.

Chew some peppermint gum 

Chewing a gum doesn’t just give you a fresh breath, it also gives your mental energy level a boost. According to a 2009 study published by the University of Rhode Island, chewing gum for an hour in the morning makes one feel more energetic for the rest of the day. Mint is as effective as a cold water splash, and can instant make you feel more awake.
