Nitesh Yadav, a fitness expert based in Mumbai, said that skating is a great way to improve your mental fitness and help with balance and coordination as well as weight management. “It provides an aerobic workout by getting your heart pumping and improving circulation,” said Yadav.
Agreed neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, and shared, “Skating also has favourable effects on blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. All these results in improving cardiovascular fitness and lowering the risk of stroke and heart attack,” said Dr Kumar.
Skating strengthens the muscles in the legs, hips, and back. “Ice skating can also help you lose weight, especially if you combine it with a healthy and well-balanced diet. From building stamina and endurance to working out every muscle group of the body, ice skating is an excellent physical activity. It also helps in improved balance and coordination, which is required in daily activities,” said Yadav.

Stressing that skating indeed improves muscle strength (of legs, core and abdominal groups) and improves balance, Dr Kumar said that skating is good for improving mental health (reduces the risk of stress, anxiety and depression) and improves memory too. “So, if one is looking for a good aerobic exercise to improve either cardiovascular fitness or improve brain health, skating would perfectly fit the bill,” said Dr Kumar.
Santosh Mishra, owner, Skatelife Skating Academy, Mumbai also called it a fun exercise. “Skating for exercise helps burn off extra energy, build strong muscles, and maintain a healthy weight. With a calmer mind comes improved sleep,” said Mishra.
Mishra also said that endorphins, the chemicals produced in the body during vigorous exercise, offer a natural way to regulate mood and generate a feeling of well-being. “It also gives a sense of accomplishment and can provide a confidence boost,” said Mishra.
According to Mishra, here are some facts about skating:
*30 minutes of skating produces a heart rate of at least 148 beats per minute.
*Skating 1 hour per week burns at least 600 calories.
*Skating builds strength and increases muscle endurance.
