Saina Nehwal, who has often credited her parents for her success, shared a glimpse of her mother, Usha Nehwal, doing Surya Namaskars in a salwar kameez. Appreciating her mother for always inspiring her, Saina wrote in an Instagram post: “Coach No. 1 — Mummy! Bachpan se training chal rahi hai…aur abhi bhi break nahi mila! (I have been trained since childhood…and I am yet to get a break!)”

The comments section lauded the badminton champ’s mom for her commitment to fitness.

“Kya baat hai. Lots of love to mummy Ji,” one wrote, while another shared, “Very nice mam. You are really an inspiration to everyone who is sitting idle at home”.

Yet another wrote, “Hehe..loved the way you put it,”…abhi tak nahi ruka!”, hahahhaa”

Notably, Usha and her husband, Harvir Singh Nehwal, were both badminton players, with Usha being a district champion in Haryana.

Taking a cue from her commitment to fitness, let’s explore how it is essential at every age.

Saina’s glimpse of her mother, Usha, working out is more than a sweet family moment. “Saina calling her mother ‘Coach No. 1’ beautifully reflects how inspiration often comes from within the family and how the first lessons in discipline and resilience are learned by observing the people closest to us,” fitness expert Garima Goyal said.

It is a powerful reminder that “fitness has no age limit” and that an active lifestyle is often shaped by what we see at home. “When parents prioritise movement, children grow up valuing strength, discipline, and routine as a normal part of life rather than a chore,” said Goyal.

From a wellness perspective, seeing older adults remain consistent with their workouts also reinforces the role of regular physical activity in supporting joint mobility, balance, metabolic health, and emotional well-being. This is also where simple practices like Surya Namaskar become especially beneficial for the elderly. “A few slow, mindful rounds improve flexibility of the spine, enhance circulation and help maintain balance and posture. Performed gently, they reduce stiffness and support smooth, pain-free movement in day-to-day life,” said Goyal.

According to Goyal, fitness does not have to be intense or complicated; small, steady efforts done daily can create lifelong vitality.
