You have heard of cat yoga, dog yoga and even bunny yoga but how about goat yoga? Just when we thought yoga trends couldn’t get any more bizarre, Lainey Morse, a yoga instructor from Oregon went ahead and introduced ‘Goat Yoga’. So, what’s the deal? Turns out, in her class the animals wander around, cuddle her students and even climb up on their backs while they practise yoga. According to Morse, the idea behind such an endeavour is to spread joy as it’s hard to be sad and depressed when you have goats jumping around you and wanting to be in your lap.
Morse, a former portrait and editorial photographer, struck upon the idea of ‘Goat Yoga’ during a children’s birthday party at her No Regrets Farm in Albany, Oregon, when a parent suggested the location as a site for a yoga class. So far she has only held one class, but it was a huge hit and the feedback has been amazing. According to a statement in The Oregonian, Lainey Morse says, “My goats are very social and friendly animals and love to interact with people. Animals are known to have so many health benefits for humans as well, so the mix of goats and yoga seemed to fit.”
She believes that the six animals, a mixture of Nigerian dwarf and pygmy goats and one full-sized Boer can help provide the needed therapy to humans. On her website Morse wrote, “The ultimate end goal is to specialise in animal-assisted therapy for people suffering grief or abuse as well as people with special needs or disabilities. That is down the road but as for now, I’m starting out with Goat Yoga which has been a huge hit.”
But it doesn’t stop here. She has plans of opening Goat Yoga retreats in the future. Don’t know what the future holds but currently, all classes are sold out!
