Seventy-three-year old Narayana Reddy of the Indian state of Telangana was a YouTube sensation. His videos comprised many unique, elaborate and mouth-watering recipes that could feed an entire village! Reddy would cook the dishes himself, and then share them with the less privileged, mostly orphans. This Good Samaritan act of his won many hearts.
His sudden death, therefore, came as a rude shock to his YouTube family comprising 6.15 million subscribers. The announcement was made on October 31, in the form of a moving video on his channel ‘Grandpa Kitchen’. Reddy, fondly addressed as ‘Grandpa’ had been ailing for a while now, and passed away on October 27.
“Loving, caring, sharing. This is my family,” Reddy says in the video.
He will be remembered for his contributions to his village and the society at large and his many lip-smacking dishes. Here’s a look-back at some of his past videos, in which he can be seen preparing interesting dishes from different parts of the world.
In one of his earliest videos, released on the channel some two years ago, Reddy can be seen working on the agricultural fields — which was how he made his living. He cleans up, and gets cooking — preparing a dish with 2,000 eggs in one just sitting. The dish is neatly packaged and delivered to homeless people. This video has a whopping 2.6 million views.
The channel was birthed in 2017, and this was the first video ever. Since then, it has grown exponentially, and has found a global viewership. The Facebook page of ‘Grandpa Kitchen’, too, has a significant following with 455k likes. “We are YouTube channel called Grandpa Kitchen, we entertain, educate people by cooking food and we donate to charity (sic),” reads the Facebook description.
From preparing KFC-styled chicken to American lasagna and desserts like Oreo pudding, Reddy had a spectacular culinary spectrum. His last-released cooking video was that of a macaroni and cheese pasta preparation. In the video, a visibly-unwell Reddy can be seen listening to the heartwarming messages he had received from people across the world, lauding him for his efforts for the community.
Last year, another YouTube sensation — the 107-year-old Mastanamma from the state of Andhra Pradesh — passed away. She, too, found fame for her unique recipes that she made at her village. Her channel ‘Country Foods’ continues to exist.
