India’s badminton sensation, PV Sindhu, began a new chapter in her life as she tied the knot with Venkata Datta Sai, the Executive Director at Hyderabad-based Posidex Technologies, in an intimate wedding ceremony on December 22, 2024. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist with a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Games and a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is celebrated as India’s most successful shuttler. Now, her personal milestone has also captured hearts across the nation.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Sindhu and Sai opened up about their journey, from being family friends to life partners. “We were family friends and have known each other for quite some time,” Sindhu shared, while Sai added, “10 years almost… We met in 2013.”

Their love story took an unexpected turn when they encountered each other on a chance encounter on a flight. Sindhu recalled, “We met once in a blue moon earlier. Then, once we met on a flight and started talking.”

Sai elaborated on this serendipitous meeting, saying, “It was a flight from Hyderabad to Delhi, and we happened to take it again after many months. I always joke that she messaged me first, asking, ‘Have you reached?’ and ‘Have you left the airport?’”

While the initial conversations were casual, Sindhu admitted that her primary focus at the time was badminton. It wasn’t until after her Olympic triumphs that they decided to take their relationship to the next level, and the rest, as they say, is history.

“Everything changed when we reconnected on a flight,” Sindhu told Vogue in an interview. “That journey brought us closer, and it felt like the stars aligned. It was almost like love at first sight, and from that moment on, everything just felt right.”

When asked about her idea of an ideal partner and how Sai fits that description, Sindhu expressed heartfelt admiration. “He is very supportive, very caring, and whatever he promises, he gets it done. You need a partner who is very, very supportive and makes sure he is right there,” she told CNBC, beaming with joy.

Sindhu’s father, PV Ramana, had earlier revealed that while the families had known each other for years, the wedding plans were finalised just a month prior. “The two families knew each other, but it was only a month ago that everything was finalised. December was chosen as the wedding month since Sindhu didn’t have any badminton matches during this time,” Ramana told PTI.
