John Krasinski, crowned People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” this year, shared a glimpse into his family’s light-hearted reaction. The Jack Ryan star revealed that his wife, actress Emily Blunt, was “very excited” about the honour. “There was a lot of joy involved in me telling her,” he said. She even joked that she would wallpaper their house with the cover if her husband received the title. “Do we have that on camera? Because that’s like a binding contract, I think,” he shared. This light-hearted response of hers highlights the important role humour plays in their marriage.

Ashutosh Tiwari, psychologist and director at MindGlass Wellbeing Pvt Ltd. in Delhi, said that humour is more than just entertainment in a relationship—it is a powerful tool for connection. Alongside trust, respect, and communication, humour plays a pivotal role in fostering emotional intimacy.

“Humor acts as social glue. When a couple shares jokes that match their energy, it not only enhances their shared laughter but also reflects their strong emotional bond and mutual satisfaction,” he said.

Humor, he notes, is also a healthy coping mechanism. It allows couples to express positive emotions, manage stress without resorting to unhealthy habits, and develop resilience. “When couples share jokes and use humor, it can help resolve personal conflicts, provide a platform for open dialogues, reduce vulnerability, and strengthen their bond and trust,” he said.

According to him, couples can enhance their intimacy by sharing jokes they enjoy together and engaging in conversation that deepens their connection, drawing from their shared experiences and laughter. For instance, some couples choose to share humorous memes on social media, a strategy that has proven to be effective, according to numerous clients, Tiwari said.

“Cultivating humor in relationships is easy, and it starts with being playful, using some self-deprecating humor and jokes first and later exploring the shared interests. The idea here is that by cracking jokes about themselves first, couples can learn the degree and type of interest their partners share while being humorous,” he said.
