If you thought supermodels could just walk the ramp and wear pretty clothes, then put those age-old stereotypical notions into a wooden box and burn it. Because as model Gigi Hadid just showed, today’s women can pretty well show you some stars if they’re messed with.
A video showing the 21-year-old model elbowing a man who just randomly came up and tried to pick her up from behind has gone viral. Hadid, who has training in self defence, was walking with her sister Bella after the Max Mara show at the Milan Fashion Week when the incident happened. The model was initially alarmed, but showed presence of mind as she used her elbow to fight off the man.
Visibly shaken, Hadid entered her waiting car with the help of security personnelle. She later also tweeted: “I’m a HUMAN BEING and had EVERY RIGHT to defend myself. How dare that idiot thinks he has the right to man-handle a complete stranger. He ran quick tho”.
She also thanked her boxing coach in a tweet, and then had a word of advice for all the women out there: “GIRLS, prepare yourselves so that, if you ever feel in danger, MUSCLE MEMORY can fight back for you. Thank you all so much for ur support.”
The man, who later identified himself to The Hollywood Reporter as Vitalii Sediuk wrapped his arms around her waist from behind and lifted her. On the brave or instinctive side, the model tried to pursue the man down the Corso Venezia street only to be held back by a member of her team. Sediuk later took to Instagram and gave reasons for his action. “While I consider Gigi Hadid beautiful, she and her friend Kendall Jenner, have nothing to do with high fashion,” he wrote. “You can call it a manifest or a protest,” he added.
Later, the ‘Virgin Eyes’ actress posted her own text thanking fans for their support and saying that she “had EVERY RIGHT to defend myself.”
“How dare that idiot thinks he has the right to man-handle a complete stranger,” she added.
Though there were many who immediately criticised the model for hitting a prankster, many came to her defence, applauding her on how she handled herself. One such response was by actress Anna Kendrick, who took to Twitter to appreciate Hadid’s elbow hit.

Well, that’ll teach people to think women can’t defend themselves. You go, girl!
