Starting tomorrow, Bengal comes to Delhi, albeit for two days. Kolkata-based stylist and blogger Chikky Goenka’s initiative, “Travelling Trunk – Made in Bengal” aims at promoting designers based in West Bengal in the national capital. The fiesta begins today, and is being held in collaboration with jewellery brand NIMAI at its store in Shahpur Jat.
The Delhi edition includes familiar names such as Kallol Datta, Nupur Kanoi and Paromita Banerjee alongside Debashri Samanta (who calls her handwoven clothing line anti-print) Eshaani Jayaswal (a graduate from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata, who will showcase bridal wear), and Aditya Dugar (who brings tailored fabric treated with novel techniques). Jewellery artiste Vasundhara Mantri and The Jade Tree are the others among the 16 designers. Goenka plans to take the concept to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Bengaluru and Indore as well.
One of the highlights is Rohan Arora’s line of handcrafted footwear. Having launched his signature label in 2010, he has designed and manufactured shoes for leading Indian designers. The pop-up show also brings in designers Rimi Nayak, Sneha Arora, Vasavi Shah, Blank Slate by Snigdha Seksaria, Door of Maai, LovetoBag and Suede. The collections are priced between Rs 2,500 and Rs 20,000, informs Goenka.
“When I was curating the show, I was firm about not following a particular theme. We chose designers whose work is diverse. While the show will highlight handlooms and craftsmanship from the state, you will also see a lot of contemporary styles. It’s a look that is very global,” says Goenka, who has been chronicling fashion of the region in her blog, Styleograph.
