Shah Rukh Khan creates history as first Indian male actor to walk Met Gala carpet; keeps it classic in an all-black look and ‘K’ pendant

Sharing details about his look, the designer wrote on Instagram, “Shah Rukh Khan wears a floor-length, elongated coat in Tasmanian superfine wool with monogrammed, Japanese horn buttons. The coat is hand canvassed, single-breasted with a peak collar and wide lapels. Paired with a crepe de chine silk shirt and tailored superfine wool trousers. A pleated satin kamarbandh completes this bespoke look. Layered with a custom stack and complemented with The Bengal Tiger Head Cane crafted in 18k gold with tourmalines, sapphires, old mine cut and brilliant cut diamonds.”

Calling Shah Rukh Khan one of the greatest superstars in the world, he added that he is “a cinematic hero, his blockbuster performances and leading-man charisma have created a legendary international fan following. My interpretation of the Black Dandy is demonstrating his super stardom on a global stage. Dressed in classic menswear with the maximalist flourish of Sabyasachi, Shah Rukh Khan is a magician, superstar, and icon. Period.”

As expected, his look took over the internet, with fans expressing admiration with comments like, ‘His personality is saving the clothes here quite literally,’ ‘His presence 🔥🔥🔥🔥,’ and ‘His aura saves everything.’ But some expressed disappointment with his outfit for the day, ‘Who put my king in those tacky necklaces and a black hospital gown?’, ‘K for king at serving nothing at the MET,’ and ‘What a Sabyappointment 😢’.

Last year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” will be on display from May 10 to October 26, 2025. In line with the theme, this year’s dress code, “Tailored for You,” is a nod to Dandyism – a stereotype-bending menswear style and code of conduct prevalent in Black culture during the 18th and 19th centuries, defined by tailored outfits and elegant and refined silhouettes.

But not the actor, even the ace designer, walked the blue carpet — made in Kerala for the third time — in a custom look. Sabyasachi wore a white shirt, layered with a trench coat and an overcoat with a trail. He paired the same with black high-waisted trousers and shiny black shoes. Keeping it simple, he accessorised his look with a choker and wore multiple rings. Sabyasachi opted for a headgear with a brooch to complete his well-tailored look. This is the second time he has walked the carpet on ‘fashion’s biggest night.’

Other Indian celebrities who attended the Met Gala this year include Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Kiara Advani, Isha Ambani, Diljit Dosanjh, Mona Patel, and designer Manish Malhotra.
