The significance lies in the designers' perceived rivalry within the Indian fashion scene. (Source: Fenty Beauty/ Instagram)Rihanna, the undisputed queen of defying expectations, continues to break boundaries. From red carpet showstoppers to maternity style inspiration, she carves her own path. At her Fenty Hair launch, she arrived with a statement hairstyle – her natural cropped curls gracing the red carpet. But that wasn’t all. She did something many deem unthinkable.
For her look, Rihanna united two titans of Indian fashion: Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra. The result? History-making, as the two designers have never been worn together by an Indian celebrity before. She donned a head-to-toe cherry red ensemble – a strappy bodycon dress paired with a matching off-shoulder bomber jacket.

However, the real conversation starter was her jewellery. She sported a stunning three-drop necklace by Sabyasachi, featuring rubellites, tourmalines, and brilliant-cut diamonds. Additionally, she adorned a ruby choker by Manish Malhotra, crafted with 18k gold and custom-cut rubies embellished with diamonds.
The significance lies in the designers’ perceived rivalry within the Indian fashion scene. An Indian designer creation on an international celebrity is a noteworthy feat on its own, but here, two prominent Indian couturiers shared the spotlight.

Could this effortless pairing by Rihanna pave the way for future collaborations between the designers? Only time will tell. Considering a hint of discord emerged on social media.
Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Manish cropped out the Sabyasachi necklace from some of the photos he posted on Instagram, sparking accusations of “pettiness” from users. However, Manish shared three Instagram posts. One of them did have a full shot of Rihanna, including both the necklaces, while the rest were zoomed in pictures. Users also said that Sabysachi didn’t crop the images though the Bengali designer also didn’t tag Manish.

One user jokingly wrote, ‘not yall cropping sabya.'(sic) Another said, “She is wearing two neck pieces. The choker is from MM and the drop piece is from Sabya. MM cropped the photo to hide Sabya’s piece. Sabya didn’t.”. One user suggested, “instead of cropping the necklace, you could have blurred it.”

Despite the controversy, this event highlights Rihanna’s trendsetting style and the potential for a shift in the dynamic between these two leading Indian fashion houses.
