Decoding Priyanka Chopra’s ‘upcycled vintage look with a modern twist’ created using a 65-year-old vintage Banarasi patola sari

It would not be wrong to say that the opening ceremony for the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), a three-day event, was not only high on Indian arts, culture, craftsmanship, and design, but also fashion and glamour, courtesy of our favourite celebrities — both, from Hollywood and Bollywood. Among the attendees was also Priyanka Chopra who arrived in Mumbai with singer Nick Jonas and their daughter, Malti Marie Jonas.
After stunning in a shimmery ensemble that came attached with a matching cape on Day 1, the Quantico actor sported an “upcycled vintage look with a modern twist” — an outfit, she said was an “amalgamation of the east and the west! Like me” — on the second day. Created by ace designer Amit Aggarwal, Priyanka was seen in a handcrafted outfit with a story “that is so apt for an evening celebrating Indian art and fashion.”
The stunning piece was created using a “65-year-old vintage Banarasi patola (brocade) saree with silver threads and a gold electroplating on khadi silk,” she shared on Instagram, adding that it was paired with a sequins sheet holographic bustier to “reflect the nine colours of ikat weave that the brocade is set in.”
“Thank you for your genius Amit and your gifted team,” she added.

Sharing details about the outfit, which was crafted over six months with the original vintage textile handwoven in the craft clusters of Varanasi, the designer wrote: “On the second day of NMACC, celebrating Indian craftsmanship, we created a custom look for Priyanka that is an ode to her being and path, rooted yet ever evolving. The ensemble was crafted by pairing a 60 year old vintage Banarasi brocade saree made using silver threads and a gold electroplating on khadi silk, draped over and structured with a jewel toned moulded body made of unique crafted material and paired with a signature holographic bustier.”
But it was not just PeeCee, Banarasi silk seemed to be a hot favourite among other celebrities attending the event. Saba Azad, too, wore a custom creation by the same designer made from red Banarasi silk sari.

There was also Kriti Sanon who looked stupendous in a gorgeous black cut-out gown made from a black and gold Banarasi brocade sari. The stunning creation, by designer Monisha Jaising, featured a thigh-high slit, a one-shoulder detail, and a matching cape. Sharing her photos in the couture outfit, Kriti wrote, “Every Banarasi saree has a story specially when it ends up in a gown & cape!”

Apart from Banarasi, the Paithani sari, which is made from fine mulberry silk and handwoven in the Paithan region of Maharashtra, also got representation at NMACC. Shraddha Kapoor wore a rouge coloured Paithani sari that was stitched on a classic black fabric gown by Manish Malhotra.

Various international celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Law Roach, and others also attended NMACC cultural events and fashion exhibitions. Both Gigi and Zendaya wore Indian designers for the occasion.
