Love leather and leather products but think it’s cruel and harsh on animals? Well, no more worries, there is a vegan substitute to fulfill all your fashion desires. From shoes, bags to even clothes, the new alternative is being used to manufacture all.

The new sustainable substitute called the Pinatex, is a byproduct of pineapple crop. The material is manufactured from the fibers of pineapple leaves. For what’s it worth, it reduces waste after the fruits are harvested and it does not require an additional water or assistance to grow the main source.  A mesh of the fiber obtained from the leaves is made, then it goes through few mechanic and chemical processes, to get to the finished product.

The Pinatex was designed by leather expert Carmen Hijosa, who visited Philippines while researching alternatives to leather realised, the country grows a lot of pineapples and ends up with a lot of wasted leaves. The leaves, Hijosa realised, had certain features that might make it possible to turn them into a plant-based leather alternative. According to reports, she had looked into leaves of other plants, but said it was only pineapple leaves fibers had the strength and durability that would match with leather.

It took around seven years of research to develop, what is now Pinatex.

Since then, it was been widely accepted, praised and used by many renowned brands, including Puma. Yes, Puma designed a shoes using Pinatex instead of leather and people loved it. Pinatex handbags are new favourite and are top trends.

According to reports, Hijosa’s startup, Ananas Anam, has been working with local companies and farmers in the Philippines. The new material has given a boost to the country’s farmers who now earn extra through recycling a product that was earlier just a waste.

Hijosa also recieved the Arts Foundation’s 2016 Award for Materials Innovation.

As leather is often associated with animal cruelty, even PETA has appreciated his new innovation. Interestingly, Pinatex is the first fabric to receive a ‘PETA-Approved Vegan’ logo for supplying compassionate designers and shops with a sustainable, high-performance vegan leather.
