Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Kurta-Jacket’ combination, that he recently gifted to South Korean President Moon Jae-in is the new fashion fad among youngsters. According to a report in PTI, more than 1,400 pieces of the outfit are sold every day from the seven khadi outlets in the national capital.
Popularly known as Modi-Jackets and Modi-Kurtas, this range was launched by Khadi India at its flagship store at Connaught Place on September 17, to mark the prime minister’s birthday. KVIC chairman V K Saxena said they intend to launch ‘Modi Kurta-Jacket’ range in several outlets across India after it sold the way it did.
A record sale of Rs 14.76 crore was registered in October 2018 at the Connaught Place outlet. “The response of Modi Jackets and Kurtas can be understood that at least 200 pieces are being sold on an average daily at each of the seven khadi India outlets across the nation, including Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bhopal, Mumbai and Ernakulam,” he said. Saxena also said that Modi’s appeal to adopt khadi has led to a mass awareness about the fabric. This has resulted in the sudden interest among the youngsters regarding the fabric.
It was Nehru who used to wear these jackets and perhaps Modi made it famous. Bipin Chauhan, managing director of JadeBlue Lifestyle India Ltd, told The Indian Express, “There is no doubt that Modiji has popularised it and taken it to the masses. Nehruji used to largely wear white and off-white jackets. He never wore colours. Modiji brought in colours and a new design. It has become a style statement even among corporates.”
