Designer Shubhika Sharma on creating Liza Koshy’s NMACC gala outfit that featured names of karigars

The American actor and YouTuber's outfit paid homage to the hardwork and skill of the various artisans behind the creation in a unique way

The launch of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre — touted as India’s first-of-its-kind multi-disciplinary cultural and art space — was attended by many celebrities, from both Hollywood and Bollywood. Among them was Liza Koshy, American actor and Youtuber, who graced the event in a stunning mermaid-fitted lehenga set designed by Shubhika Sharma, founder of Papa Don’t Preach. But there was a unique element to Koshy’s outfit, one that stood out among the milling crowd.

While many celebrities who graced the event’s pink carpet lauded respective designers for their exquisite looks, she took it a notch higher — her dress paid homage to all the karigars and their sheer hard work that made her dress become a reality. How she did do it? By wearing a 20-inch label on the dupatta of her outfit that featured the names of the artistes who worked on the outfit.

Talking about the same, Sharma said, “The lehenga is part of our first-ever bridal collection, which makes it all the more special. The entire collection, including this dress, is envisioned to step away from the cacophony of conventional bridal looks,” adding that this outfit is a unique blend of icy silver 3D embellishments and lilac shades as opposed to the fiery reds associated with bridal couture. For added drama, the lehenga included a waist-side cut covered with tulle and silver embroidered tassels and was teamed with their signature butterfly blouse, appliqued in lustrous lilac silk.

“However, the crowning glory was the oversized label we added to the dupatta,” the designer told indianexpress.com. “All our labels bear the name of our karigars before the name of the brand. But for this one, we wanted to take that micro piece of fabric, hidden away at the back, and blow it up for the world to see,” Sharma said.

Naming the craftsmen, she shared that Taufik Qureshi, an embroidery supervisor, has been with them since the inception of the brand, while Mahindra Zala, head of sampling, played a pivotal role along with Mahsooq Ali, Mahjeed Sheikh, Ahsaan Sheikh, Mohd. Monish Sheikh, along with a team of 150 karigars.

On being asked about her inspiration, the designer shared that it came from Dutch trend forecaster, Lidewij Edelkoort who, in the anti-fashion manifesto wrote that it takes an army to make a single garment, yet the label only states the brand’s name. “Over a year ago, we decided to rename our label with things that actually matter: the people that make the garment and the people who wear it.”

Concluding, she said, “It brings me immense satisfaction to know that people who love and engage with the brand also know the names of the people that created it. We are committed to working towards complete transparency in our supply chain and it was a chance for me to be loud and proud about our practices.”
