In a studio hangar festooned with origami paper birds and pinwheels, designer to the stars, Manish Malhotra, opened Lakme Fashion Week Summer-Resort 2016 with a collection that was distinctly soft and summery, and unabashedly bridal. “Elements”, inspired by earth, water, wind and flame, saw 70 ensembles walk the ramp, covering every conceivable silhouette that a summer bride could aspire for. From lehengas, saris, gowns and ghararas to cocktail dresses, ponchos and off-shoulder jumpsuits, there was something for everyone in the bridal party.
With colours ranging from blush pink, nude, grey and mint green to powder blue and sunset orange, the designer dialled the drama down and stuck to elegance. Malhotra knows his market all too well and he was truly in his element with the organza, tussar, crepe creations, embellished with tone-on-tone thread embroidery, smattering of salli sequins and delicate sequin flowers, displaying far more mastery and confidence than he did with his recently-launched textile-heavy “The Regal Threads” collection. The menswear impressed especially — crisply tailored, not overly ornamental and in colours ranging from ivory, salmon, mint, grey and blue.
For a costume designer and couturier, who has gone through phases of making the most of his filmy connections, and, on rare occasions, distancing himself to attribute a more serious quality to his designs, Malhotra embraced his celebrity ties with gusto. While Arjun Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez walked the ramp as his showstoppers, the centre aisle was reserved for Nita Ambani, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Dia Mirza, Farah Khan, Sophie Choudry, Shriya Saran and Sangeeta Bijlani, among others. It was a starry night, indeed.
