New York Fashion Week 2023 commenced on Thursday, September 7, and will go on till September 13. At the fashion extravaganza, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) planned a demonstration to make a statement, as per a press release. On Thursday, attendees of Coach’s Spring/Summer 2024 runway show at the New York Public Library were disrupted by protesters denouncing the company’s usage of leather.
Two activists participated in the Spring 2024 ready-to-wear runway show alongside models, with one activist wearing only body paint that was put over underwear to resemble a skinned body with muscles, flesh, and tendons.
A third activist caught what was happening on camera. Early in the program, security attempted to stop the protesters, according to CNN, but they made it approximately halfway around the room before being forcibly removed from the runway.
Later, PETA shared that one of the protesters was a member of the animal rights organisation. In accordance with their press release, the stunt aimed to “slam the brand for its cruelty to cows and its reliance on environmentally destructive leather products.”
A woman walked into the centre of the runway mid-show, as captured on video of the unexpected event. She can be seen walking down the catwalk with a sign painted on her chest that reads, “Coach: Leather Kills,” and her body is covered in red, black, and white body paint that simulates muscles. Another demonstrator followed after holding up a banner with the same message before she is picked up and carried off the runway forcibly by security.

“PETA is shaking up Coach’s catwalk to drive home the message that leather belongs in the annals of history, not in designers’ current collections,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in a press statement. “Today’s conscientious consumers know that the future of fashion lies in innovative vegan materials, not in cows’ sliced-off skin.”
Stuart Vevers, the creative director of Coach, reportedly said, “I respect all points of view” at the dinner that followed the presentation, according to Vogue US.
The show happened at the New York Public Library, and famous figures in the front row included Jennifer Lopez and Lil Nas X. It was Stuart Vevers’ tenth-anniversary collection as creative director.
