As the mercury dips and the chill sets in, winter is the ideal season to showcase the artistry of layering clothes. Beyond the necessity of staying warm, winter fashion is the perfect opportunity to create stylish ensembles that seamlessly blend cosiness and chic. Here is where the art of layering comes in, which is not just about piling on garments, but is rather a nuanced interplay of textures, colours and functionality.

So, if you’re looking to master the winter wardrobe with the finesse of layering, here is your starter’s guide:

The key lies in balance

To perfect layering, think of it like a delicate dance of adding one piece of clothing over another — creating an outfit for optimal insulation as well as maximum chic and versatility.

“The best analogy is imagining the process of making a sandwich — you have your slices of bread, your toppings, and your sauces. You add a layer each time to create a stack. But you must be careful, too much mustard can spoil a sandwich, just like too many layers can overshadow your personal style. The key lies in finding the perfect balance to creating a simple yet stylish winter look to tackle the cold,” says Kanupriya, designer at Latin Quarters.

Start with basics

Every masterpiece begins with a solid foundation. “In winters, this means investing in quality basics like thermal tops, leggings and lightweight long-sleeve tops. Stick to neutral tones as a base to create a versatile canvas for the layers to come,” explains Prof. Devender Singh Kharb, dean, School of Fashion, World University of Design, Sonipat.

Mix and match fabrics

Variety is the spice of life, and the same holds true for layering. “Always go for contrasting materials and textures for a more visually appealing look. Combine the softness of knits with the sleekness of leather or the warmth of wool with the sheen of silk. This adds depth and interest to your outfit,” Prof. Kharb says.

Play with proportions

Layering is an art of proportions. “Experiment with different lengths and silhouettes to add complexity and dimension to your outfit,” Prof. Kharb explains.

For instance, pair a cropped jacket with high-rise jeans or layer a long cardigan over a fitted dress. The key is to balance lengths and avoid overwhelming your frame with too much volume.

Accessorise thoughtfully

Accessories are the finishing touches to your layered outfit. “Throw in an oversized woolen scarf around the neck, a chunky brooch or oversized gold pins, and gloves to stylise your otherwise somber pieces. These not only add warmth but also contribute to the overall aesthetic. Choose accessories that complement the rest of your layers, creating a cohesive and polished look,” says Prof. Kharb.

Footwear matters

Don’t forget about your feet. “Boots are the ultimate winter staple. While sneakers are in, boots perfectly snuggle your feet — making it a practical option. From bold knee-high boots to sassy ankle boots, there’s a boot for every mood. Let your creativity go wild and pair them daringly with skirts, dresses or jeans,” Kanupriya shares.

She also recommends investing in a quality pair of wellies in case of a rainy winter day.

Experiment with colour

Winter doesn’t mean sticking to muted tones. “Experiment with a rich and varied colour palette. Jewel tones, earthy hues, and pops of colour can bring vibrancy and personality to your layered look. This can be anything from a vibrant scarf, a coloured shirt, to even colourful socks,” says Prof. Kharb.

Mastering the art of layering is all about experimentation and having fun. Let your winter wardrobe become a canvas for your personal style!
