Choreographer Dhanashree Verma recently shared the secret behind her long and lustrous hair. “Genetics,” she quipped, adding that while she doesn’t have a “proper haircare routine”, she tries to keep it as basic as possible.
“I feel the more products you use, the more chemicals you put on your scalp. I don’t think that’s right for your hair. So, I stick to only one shampoo and one conditioner. We live in Mumbai, and it’s very humid. So, sometimes, you have to choose your shampoo very wisely. Too much moisture is also bad,” Verma told Humans of Bombay.
Taking a cue from her, we asked an expert if following basic practices is enough for good hair.
Dr Karuna Malhotra, aesthetic physician, cosmetologist, and skin expert from Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic, Rajouri Garden, New Delhi, said that sticking to a simple, regular routine is beneficial, but it is not a brand or product that matters. “It’s whether those products suit your scalp and hair type. If a shampoo gently cleanses without stripping natural oils, a conditioner provides hydration, and an oil nourishes roots and scalp, then consistent use can indeed promote healthier, longer hair,” said Dr Malhotra.
However, she cautions that hair also goes through changes due to hormones, seasons, diet, and lifestyle. “Sometimes, the same product may stop working effectively, or your scalp may develop new needs. In such cases, rotating products or choosing targeted formulations becomes necessary,” Dr Malhotra elucidated.
Ultimately, she recommends focusing less on rigidly using only one product and more on choosing mild, suitable formulations, oiling 1–2 times a week, and maintaining a balanced diet. “Regularity helps, but adaptability is equally essential for truly long and strong hair,” said Dr Malhotra.
