Tourism is making a strong comeback post-pandemic, with travellers eager to explore new destinations and revisit old favourites. The travel industry is witnessing a surge in bookings and activity. However, the rapid resurgence of tourism has also brought to light the challenge of overtourism in certain popular spots.
Highlighting the same, research — conducted by MoneyTransfers.com — recently revealed the world’s most overcrowded tourist destinations. It compared the number of visitors with the local population of famous tourist destinations.
Phuket in Thailand grabbed the top spot with 118.5 travellers per resident. It was followed by Pattaya and Krabi with 98.7 and 72.2 travellers per resident, respectively.

The list mentioned that Thailand is a popular destination among travellers not only because of its natural beauty and well-developed tourism but also because it offers excellent value for money. “Anyone looking to convert and send money in Thailand will likely find an extremely favourable exchange rate, meaning your money goes much further here than in other popular destinations,” according to the website.
However, despite cities in Thailand taking up three spots for most overtouristed cities in the world, the country is actually relatively low in the ranking of countries most visited. Austria took the spot in the list of most overcrowded countries in the world, with an average of 3.6 international visitors per inhabitant. It is followed by Hong Kong and Greece with 3.8 and 3 tourists per inhabitant, respectively.
“The index highlights just how overcrowded many cities around the world are by international visitors. Although not necessarily an unwelcome thing in many ways, it’s undeniable that this level of popularity and tourists wildly outnumbering locals can result in overcrowding and a cascade of negative effects,” Jonathan Merry, resident travel expert at MoneyTransfers.com, said on the official website.
The index also highlighted how mass tourism is beginning to destroy many of the most loved destinations. “The recent devastating fires in Maui highlighted the feelings many natives to popular destinations have: a desire for tourists to stay away, especially when the land itself is at risk,” Merry said.
