Comedian Pete Davidson’s latest campaign has him sporting a new look, devoid of his signature tattoos. In an interview with Today.com, he announced that he has removed more than 100 tattoos from his body. “I got sober and I saw myself in the mirror, and I was like, ‘Nah.’ I was like, ‘I need to change it up a little bit,’” Davidson said, adding that he’s been slowly having his tattoos removed since 2020 and has shelled out about 200k dollars in the process.

Curious, indianexpress.com spoke to Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist, Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai to understand the key concerns and precautions to keep in mind when getting your tattoos removed.

“Before deciding to remove a tattoo, one needs to understand that it may need multiple sessions as it’s not an easy process. Sometimes it even becomes challenging to completely erase the tattoo, especially if it has deep ink or bright colors,” said the expert.

Precautions to note

Taking proper after-care, keeping the treated area clean, and also avoiding sun exposure to significantly prevent your skin from getting burnt or to prevent post procedure pigmentation are key facets to keep in mind, said Dr Chause. Common mistakes can include opting for treatments that are cheap or unverified, picking at the treated area, and most importantly not being patient enough to wait for the final results.

“Some people expect the instant removal of their tattoo but in reality, it may take even a few weeks or months for the tattoo to fade away. If you are going with a laser removal procedure then ensure that you check if your skin type is suitable for it or not. Ditch DIY tattoo removal creams or home remedies you see online as they do more harm than good. They can easily cause irritation, infection or even scarring,” she explained.

Tattoo removal can be painful, similar to getting a tattoo. So using a numbing cream or trying cooling methods can be helpful. “Stay hydrated by drinking enough fluid and maintaining good skin health before starting the procedure for better and faster healing,” she said. Always consult a dermatologist before undergoing these treatments to weigh down potential benefits and downsides to make the right decision.
