Dhanteras 2018 Gold, Silver: Diwali, one of the most awaited and celebrated festivals of the year, begins with Dhanteras. Observed on the 13th day of the month of Ashwin, according to the Hindu lunar calendar, the festival will be celebrated on November 5 this year.

The word Dhanteras translates to wealth and prosperity. On this day, people purchase gold, silver, and utensils along with new clothes and offer their prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, who is regarded as the Goddess of wealth, and light diyas in their homes to welcome her and seek her blessings. It is believed that worshipping the goddess will bring wealth and good fortune in the house. Many people also worship Kuber, the God of treasure.

Why do people buy gold, silver and utensils on Dhanteras?

As far as the story goes, the root of this celebration can be traced back to the son of King Hima, whose horoscope revealed a cause of worry – it predicted that he would die of snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. His wife took it upon herself to defy the prediction and came up with a plan.

She laid out all her ornaments in a basket and kept it near the door with lit lamps. The next day, when Yama, the God of Death, came in the form of a serpent to bite the prince, he was dazzled by all the light and could not enter the house. So, he left the king alone. His wife’s cleverness saved him and that is why people buy gold on this day.
