Election Commission should publish names dropped from Kerala draft rolls: Supreme courtA bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi also told the poll panel to consider extending the deadline for filing the objections.

THE SUPREME Court on Thursday asked the Election Commission to publish, if not already done, the names of persons excluded or deleted from the draft electoral rolls in Kerala, drawn up after the SIR exercise, so that voters who want to challenge their exclusion can do so.

A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi also told the poll panel to consider extending the deadline for filing the objections.

The directions came on a clutch of petitions, including those by the Kerala government, IUML leader P K Kunhalikutty, CPI(M) leader M V Govindan Master, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph and the CPI State Council.

The original deadline to submit the enumeration forms was December 4; it was extended to December 11 and then to December 18 after court orders.

On Thursday, the petitioners pointed out that 24 lakh names have been deleted from the draft rolls. They said people wanted to file objections but the names of the deleted voters were not available. The petitioners contended that some voters have been erroneously shown as deceased in the draft rolls, while some have been marked as residing outside the state.

The SC bench then ordered that names of persons who have been excluded from the draft electoral list be displayed on the offices of the gram panchayat or any other public office located in the villages and also on the official website.

The bench said, “Having regard to the difficulty being experienced by the people at large, the EC may consider the desirability of extending the date.”
