Salt lake gangrape: Hope this time no one questions victim’s character, says Roopa Ganguly

Party workers, led by state BJP women wing chief Roopa Ganguly held a demonstration in front of the Electronics Complex police station where a case has been lodged into the incident.

THE BJP on Tuesday staged a protest at Salt Lake, questioning why it had taken “so much time” for the police to take action in the gangrape case.

Party workers, led by state BJP women wing chief Roopa Ganguly held a demonstration in front of the Electronics Complex police station where a case has been lodged into the incident.

Taking a dig at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who, following the 2012 Park Street rape case, had questioned the victim’s character, Ganguly said: “I hope this time, no questions would be raised on the girl’s character… and questions like ‘why was she out so late’ and ‘why did she get into the car’ would not be asked. We have been assured by officers at Electronics Complex police station that steps would soon be taken to bring all the offenders to books. If that doesn’t happen, we will protest in front of the police station.”

The Left leaders, meanwhile, met Mamata and sought her intervention to check recurrence of such crimes against women. After meeting Mamata, the Left leader in the state Assembly, Sujan Chakrabarty, told mediapersons: “We told her that such incidents earn the state a bad name and sought her intervention. She assured us that she would look into it.”

The CPM also held a protest in front of the Electronic Complex police station demanding “exemplary” punishment for the accused.
