A day after the Centre said it has decided to re-examine and re-consider the provisions of the sedition law, the Supreme Court Tuesday sought to know if the government can issue a direction to states to keep cases under the provision in abeyance till the exercise is completed. The top court gave the government time till Wednesday to make its stand on this clear.

The court said the affidavit filed by the BJP-led Union government in response to a prayer seeking minority status for Hindus in certain states and Union territories “seems to an extent to backout of what was stated” in an “earlier” affidavit and that the court doesn’t “appreciate” this.
