Emphasising on the need to encourage people and communities to “work together” for betterment of the society, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Saturday said that the country should focus on the idea of ‘jukto sadhana’ (collaborative work) in our present times.

Sen was attending an event — ‘Chair for The Reader’ — a curated reading space project, to foster book reading and story telling habits among underprivileged children, that was organised at the Alipore Jail Museum.

Addressing the gathering the economist said that the history of the country can be traced back to collaborative work (jukto sadhana) between Hindus and Muslims. “As far as the history of our country goes, Hindus and Muslims have been working together in cohesion for ages. We need to emphasise on this idea of ‘jukto sadhana’ (collaborative work) in our present times. Juktasadhana has no spiritual connotation like sadhana. It only defines working side by side in perfect coordination,” said Sen.

The Bharat Ratna recipient, further explained, “It is not merely allowing the other community to live and not beating up anybody. Perhaps this has become the necessity in the present situation as people are being beaten up. But most importantly what is needed is, to work together.”

Further, he also pointed out that children grow and play together as friends, they need not be made aware of the values of tolerance as they are not affected by any divisive toxicity.
