Chandra, 40, best known for her roles in Hindi films such as 'Garam Masala' and 'Traffic', has contended that the song "portrays overt sexualisation", with "women shown as just sex objects." (Express File Photo)Actor Neetu Chandra has filed a public interest litigation in the Patna High Court against popular rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh complaining against alleged vulgarity in the singer’s latest song ‘Maniac.’
Chandra, 40, best known for her roles in Hindi films such as ‘Garam Masala’ and ‘Traffic’, has contended that the song “portrays overt sexualisation”, with “women shown as just sex objects.”
The actor has also alleged that the song uses “Bhojpuri language to normalise vulgarity” and throws “women’s empowerment out of the window.”
The petition has named Hirdesh Singh aka Honey Singh, 41, and other collaborators of the song including lyricist Leo Grewal and Bhojpuri singers Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi.
Chandra, who has also produced a couple of critically acclaimed Bhojpuri and Maithili films, has appealed to the court to direct the respondents to “amend the lyrics.”
The PIL is likely to be heard in March, news agency PTI reported.
Honey Singh has courted controversy earlier as well regarding the choice of lyrics for his songs.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court disposed of a petition against the rapper in 2023 calling it “infructuous” and asked to scrap an FIR against him in an alleged case of “obscene acts and songs.”
