India Weather Forecast Highlights: Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Jharkhand on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated in its forecast. Similar weather conditions will prevail over Gujarat, Kerala & Mahe, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, West Madhya Pradesh, and West Uttar Pradesh, as per the IMD, as these regions remain under an ‘orange’ alert today.

South India: While some isolated parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana will receive light/moderate rainfall today, hot and humid conditions are also likely to prevail over TN, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, according to the IMD. The wet weather conditions will also be visible over Northeast India over the next 7 days.

Delhi: After witnessing days of heavy rainfall, Delhi is likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds throughout the day on Thursday. As per the forecast for today, a yellow alert has been issued in Delhi. The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded to be 27.2 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is likely to settle at 34 degrees Celsius.

Pune and its surrounding areas witnessed heavy rain over the last 24 hours as the annual Wari pilgrimage in Maharashtra began Thursday.

The irrigation department has issued a warning about the release of water from the Jadhavwadi irrigation pond into the Indrayani river, which will cause water levels to rise in the temple towns of Dehu and Alandi in the Pune district. Devotees undertake the palkhi (palanquin) procession to Pandharpur, the temple town in the Solapur district dedicated to Lord Vitthal, from Dehu and Alandi.

The irrigation department has announced that the Jadhavwadi water tank is nearly 97 per cent full, and water will begin to discharge from the tank into the Indrayani river. As the river flows through the temple towns of Dehu, Alandi, and Tulapur, district authorities have warned people to stay away from the riverbed and to ensure that boats are securely tied.

Many devotees, as part of the Wari pilgrimage, have gathered in the temple towns, and people are advised not to venture into the river.

As monsoon intensified in Mumbai, the island city recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall during the month of June since 2023. The rainfall is expected to gain strength further, as the India Meteorological Department on Thursday issued an orange alert for Mumbai till 8.30 am on June 20.

An orange alert has been issued for the Raigad and Ratnagiri districts of Maharashtra for the next 24 hours, while a yellow alert has been issued for the Palghar and Thane districts. 

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, Mumbai's coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 142.6 mm rainfall during the 24-hour span which ended at 8.30 am on June 19, Friday. This is the highest rainfall recorded in this observatory during a 24-hour period in June in the last two years. Earlier, 148 mm of rainfall was recorded on June 29 in 2023. 

Meanwhile, the Santacruz observatory recorded 60.5 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The weather bureau had issued a yellow alert for Mumbai till 8.30 am on June 19 and was later upgraded into an orange alert.

"The water resources department has decided to release water in the Mutha River from the Khadakwasla Dam. The civic administration should inform localities in and around the river about it for safety reasons. Use of public address system should also be done for the purpose," said Prithviraj B P, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The PMC administration appealed to citizens to remove their vehicles from the riverbed, and also stop using the river bridge at Nanded city to avoid accidents.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been put on high alert in Jharkhand to deal with any untoward incident amid 'red' alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Heavy rains lashed several districts including Ranchi, throwing normal life out of gear, an official told news agency PTI on Thursday. Schools in several districts including Ranchi and Khunti have been closed on Thursday.

Ranchi has been witnessing incessant rains for the past two days and its intensity has increased since Thursday morning, a weather official said.

Deputy director at Ranchi Meteorological Centre Abhishek Anand said a red alert of extremely heavy rainfall has been sounded for Ranchi, Lohardaga, Gumla, Khunti and Simdega as a low pressure system is laying over northeast Jharkhand.

"A well marked low pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood moved slowly towards northwest and lay over northeast Jharkhand and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal at 5.30 am today. It is likely to continue to move northwestwards during the next 24 hours," he said. (PTI)

Mumbai's Powai Lake, an artificial reservoir managed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), began overflowing on Wednesday morning following continuous heavy rainfall in its catchment area over the last two days.

The lake, which has a storage capacity of 545 crore litres (5.45 billion litres), started overflowing at around 6 AM, with water levels reaching 195.10 feet, the BMC said.

In a post on X, the BMC shared a video of the lake overflowing. It further stated, "Powai Lake, one of the main artificial lakes under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), began overflowing around 6 am today. With a storage capacity of 545 crore litres (5.45 billion litres), the lake's water is non-potable and is primarily used for industrial purposes and non-potable uses in the Aarey Milk Colony. The lake has reached its capacity and started overflowing due to heavy rainfall in its catchment area over the past two days. As of now, the water level stands at 195.10 feet."

Rainfall is likely to continue across the state till June 22, even as the monsoon is expected to reach by June 25.

Shobhit Katiyar, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, told PTI, “The pre-monsoon rainfall will continue in the state till June 22. Between June 20 and 22, some areas may experience heavy rainfall, for which a yellow alert has been issued. The southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in Himachal Pradesh around June 25.”

Other parts of South India such as Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhar Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana will also receive light to moderate rainfall today.

Strong surface winds are also very likely over Kerala & Mahe, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhar Pradesh, Yanam, and Telangana on Tuesday.
