Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given a warm welcome by Papua New Guinea’s PM James Marape after he landed in the country for the Forum for India–Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) summit on Sunday.

It is Modi’s maiden visit to the country and he will be hosting the third summit of FIPIC along with the Papua New Guinea PM.

In a video posted on Twitter, the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi said, “A very special gesture by Prime Minister Marape here who has come personally to the airport to receive Prime Minister Modi”.

He added that Modi will be attending the FIPIC summit in the morning, apart from bilateral talks with the leadership of the country. Bilateral talks are also to be held with the Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Later, on the third and last day of the three-nation trip (that started with the G7 meet in Hiroshima, Japan), Modi will visit Sydney in Australia from May 22 to 24 to attend the Quad summit.
