His statement came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the passing of the Bill a “historic event”, thanking all the MPs for supporting the amendments. PM Modi said India will now enter an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice.
Congress gears up to move Supreme Court: After strongly protesting against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, the Congress party is now preparing to move the Supreme Court after the Bill got Parliament’s nod. Veteran Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a statement on X, said, “The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.” Ramesh asserted that the Congress party will “continue to resist all assaults of the Modi government” on the principles of the Constitution of India.
Waqf Bill passed in both Houses: After a stormy debate session lasting over 13 hours, the Rajya Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the early hours of Friday. The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday, and taken up for debate in the Rajya Sabha on the same day. The Upper House was adjourned at 4:02 am on Friday, and is set to resume proceedings at 11 am the same day. Today is the last day of the Parliament Budget Session, after which both Houses are expected to be adjourned sine die.
Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said, "One important milestone that we have achieved in Rajya Sabha, yesterday - we created a new record - we discussed for 17 hours and 2 minutes in Rajya Sabha (over the Waqf Amendment Bill). It seems extremely difficult to break this record... There was not a single disruption during the discussion over the Waqf amendment Bill..."
Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar at 1 pm on Friday. The House will resume for the Monsoon session, the dates for which have not been announced yet.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday chided former Congress president Sonia Gandhi over her Waqf (Amendment) Bill was "bulldozed through" remarks, and said a senior member casting aspersions on the House proceedings was "most unfortunate" as well as against the dignity of parliamentary democracy.
Without taking the name of Gandhi, who is a member of the Rajya Sabha, Birla took a stern view on her remarks after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju raised the issue and asked the Speaker to render a ruling on it. (PTI)

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday lauded the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, saying the legislation will prevent the illegal occupation of tribal land and protect the interest of the scheduled tribes.
In a series of posts on his 'X' handle, Sai accused the opposition of constantly trying to mislead the Muslim community on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and said it was highly condemnable.
The Parliament has approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, after the Rajya Sabha gave its nod to the contentious legislation following an over 13-hour debate. The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing it. It passed in the Lok Sabha early Thursday, with 288 members supporting it and 232 against it.
"Congratulations on the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in both Houses of the Parliament. The Bill is also important to protect tribal rights and their interests," he wrote. (PTI)
Home Minister Amit Shah posted on X, " Today is a historic day, when the Parliament has approved the 'Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025', ending the era of years of injustice and corruption and ushering in an era of justice and equality. Through this bill, the Waqf Board and Waqf properties are going to be more accountable, transparent and equitable. This will definitely benefit the poor, women and children of the Muslim community."
He said, "I congratulate the Prime Minister Mr. @narendramodi and the Minister of Minority Affairs Mr. @KirenRijiju for this important bill that gives justice to crores of people. Also, I express my heartfelt gratitude to all the parties and MPs who supported it."
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said on an X post, "The INC's challenge of the 2019 amendments to the RTI Act, 2005 is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC’s challenge to the validity of the amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules (2024) is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC's intervention to uphold the letter and spirit of the Places of Worship Act, 1991 is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India."
