Poll panel issues notice to Khera after BJP claims he has 2 EPIC numbers

At a press briefing on Tuesday, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said Congress’s media chairman Khera has two EPIC numbers and “is involved in voter fraud”.

“Representation of Peoples Act 1951, Section 62, Subclause 2 states that no person can vote in more than one Assembly constituency. (Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition) Rahul Gandhi’s party’s media head Pawan Khera is the real thief,” said Bhandari.

Targeting Khera and Gandhi, BJP’s information and technology department in-charge Amit Malviya said: “…it has now emerged that Pawan Khera, Congress spokesperson — who never misses a chance to flaunt his proximity to the Gandhis — holds two active EPIC numbers (in Jangpura and New Delhi Assembly Constituencies, falling under East Delhi and New Delhi Lok Sabha seats respectively)… It is now for the Election Commission to investigate how Pawan Khera holds two active EPIC numbers, and whether he voted multiple times — a clear violation of electoral laws.”

He said the “fact is simple”, the “Congress is the quintessential vote chor”. “That is why they want to tarnish everyone with the same brush. For far too long, they mutilated our electoral system, stole mandates by legitimising illegal infiltrators and non-Indians, and are now worried that the Special Intensive Revision initiated by the Election Commission will expose them,” said Malviya.

Khera, meanwhile, said issues like his name being in the electoral rolls in two constituencies is what the Congress has been talking about since August 7.

“This is the question that we are raising regarding the working of the Election Commission. Whether it is Anurag Thakur or Amit Malviya, they try to fire at the Congress, but it hits the ECI. We want to know how this list is available with the BJP leaders as well as EC. Congress keeps asking for the list but never gets it. I would like to know from the Election Commission who is being made to cast the vote from New Delhi constituency in my name. I want the CCTV footage,” said Khera, who heads the Congress media and publicity department.

He said he shifted from New Delhi constituency in 2016 and “followed the procedure to get my name deleted from there”. “But why is my name still there? This is what Rahul Gandhi has been challenging since August 7. There are hundreds and thousands of such names in every constituency of India. These are being misused. They are saying they are bringing SIR to fix this. Under SIR, they are legitimising such errors,” said Khera.
