At least 17 persons were killed, and 16 injured in two separate accidents in Uttarakhand, on Sunday. While a bus fell into a gorge near Damta in Uttarkashi district killing atleast 14 persons and leaving 14 others injured, in another accident, three persons were killed and two injured when a car fell into a gorge near Pithoragarh district headquarters.
A bus carrying upto 28 persons, including the driver, from Janki Chatti in Uttarkashi district to Vikasnagar in Dehradun district fell 150 metres into a gorge near Damta in Uttarkashi district on Sunday. While the rescue teams, comprising the district administration, the police, and the SDRF, had found 14 bodies till Sunday evening, officials from the Uttarkashi disaster management department said the death toll could rise.
The bus driver was among the 14 persons injured in the accident.
According to information from the district disaster control room, few injured persons were brought to hospitals in Dehradun. The ones who were critically injured were taken to AIIMS, Rishikesh. The passengers in the bus were from Uttarkashi, Dehradun and Tehri districts.
In a separate accident in Pithoragarh district, a car fell about 500 metres into a gorge on Sunday, resulting in three deaths. The two injured persons, including the driver, were taken to a hospital in nearby Haldwani town.
The car was going from Pithoragarh district headquarters to Gurna in the same district, and it fell into the gorge at a distance of 3 kilometres from Pithoragarh. According to information from the Pithoragarh disaster control room, all passengers in the car were Pithoragarh locals.
The authorities could not ascertain the causes of the car and the bus accidents yet.
