Controversial Uttarakhand BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi has found himself in a spot ahead of the urban local body polls after a video purportedly shows him distributing money to women during a recent Chhath Puja function in a locality in Dehradun district.
In the video that has gone viral on social media on Thursday, Joshi, who represents the Mussoorie seat in the State Assembly, can be spotted distributing money to women as they apply tika on his forehead.
With the urban local body polls scheduled for November 18, a delegation of the Congress met state election commissioner Chandra Shekhar Bhatt on Thursday to submit a complaint against Joshi, who, the Congress said, had “tried to buy votes ahead of the polls”.

Bhatt said, “I have instructed the Dehradun district magistrate (S A Murugesan) to probe the matter since the district magistrate is the nodal officer who has to ensure that the model code of conduct is not violated for the upcoming urban local body polls.”
DM Murugesan said, “I have instructed the Mussoorie RO (returning officer) to issue a notice to the MLA seeking clarification for the act (of allegedly distributing money). Further action will be based on the MLA’s response to the notice.”
The notice had not been issued till Thursday evening.
On being contacted by The Indian Express, MLA Joshi refused to comment on the matter.
In 2016, Joshi ran into a controversy after he allegedly attacked police horse Shaktiman during a BJP rally in Dehradun. Shaktiman had injured one of its hind limbs while trying to save itself from the attack. The horse had later died from the injuries.
