A Lieutenant Colonel posted in Dehradun was arrested by the city police Monday for allegedly killing his paramour, a 25-year-old woman of Nepali origin, by bashing her head with a hammer and dumping her body next to a road because she had been forcing him to marry her.

The police identified the accused as Lt Col Ramendu Upadhyay, 42, who is married and has a two-year-old child. Officers said he was earlier posted in Siliguri, West Bengal where he met Shreya Sharma aka Sumitra who hailed from Tanhu district in Nepal and worked at a dance bar. The two developed a relationship and began living together.

On Sunday, a local resident informed the Raipur police that the body of a woman was lying in a suspicious condition in the Sirwal Garh area. Officers rushed to the spot and found the woman with injuries on her head. A bottle of toilet cleaner was found lying nearby. An FIR was soon registered under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the IPC.

According to a statement issued by the Dehradun police, officers compared the arrival and departure timings of the vehicles passing through the area and noted 18 vehicles whose movements were suspicious. After further investigation, the police nabbed Upadhyay, who confessed to the murder upon interrogation.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Dehradun) Daleep Singh Kunwar said that as per the accused, he met Shreya Sharma in Siliguri during his posting there in January 2020, and they started living together. When he got posted in Dehradun, he brought Shreya too and made her stay in a rented flat. Soon, she started forcing him to marry her and also began abusing him, the SSP said. His wife also came to the flat and had an argument with Shreya.

In a statement, the Dehradun police said, “On Saturday, the accused took Shreya to a club on Rajpur Road to drink beer. There he made her drink more alcohol and drank less himself. He kept a hammer behind the seat in the car and a toilet cleaner. When Shreya was under the influence of alcohol, he took out the hammer and hit the woman hard on the head. She could not defend herself. When she died, he took the car a little further, where the road ended, and threw her there. He then took out the toilet cleaner and poured it in her mouth.”

The police have recovered the ID of the deceased woman from inside the car used for the crime. They also found the woman’s outfit, the clothes worn by Upadhyay at the time of the incident, and the blood-stained hammer used to strike her from the Thano Road forest in the Clement Town area. The blood of the deceased was found on the clothes of the accused and inside the car, officers added.
