Bank manager lodges FIR against former UP minister Nand Gopal Gupta

FIR was filed against Nand Gopal Gupta who held a Cabinet berth during the Mayawati government.

A case has been registered here against a former minister for allegedly threatening a bank official who refused to approve a loan in his name,police said today.

The FIR was filed yesterday against Nand Gopal Gupta alias Nandi who held a Cabinet berth during the previous Mayawati government in the state,by Sanjeev Rai,manager of the Civil Lines branch of Canara bank,police said.

Rai has stated in the FIR that the former minister had demanded sanction of a loan in favour of Nandiram Rice Mills owned by him on Saturday.

Rai said in his complaint,Gupta grew livid upon being informed that his account was frozen and he had been “blacklisted” by the bank as he had defaulted on a loan of over Rs three crore borrowed earlier,police said.


Rai said he tried to pacify the ex-minister and requested for some time to speak to his seniors to find a way out but Nandi allegedly “misbehaved” and threatened him with dire consequences,police said.

The ex-minister yesterday spoke to Rai on telephone and hurled abuses at him following which the case was lodged,they said.

Meanwhile,Nandi has denied having threatened or abused the bank manager and claimed that he was “cheated” by Rai who had promised him that the account will become operational once he paid dues to the tune of Rs 3.40 crore but reneged on the promise after the cash was deposited in the bank.

Nandi,whose wife Abhilasha is currently the city Mayor,also claimed that the bank manager got scared when he warnedthe official that he would get him booked for cheating and “lodged the FIR,with false complaints,as a desperate measure.”
