BJP MLA Sangeet Singh Som on Friday said the state government would soon change the names of many cities in Uttar Pradesh, including Muzaffarnagar that will be soon renamed as “Lakshmi Nagar”.
The MLA from Sardhana Assembly constituency in Meerut, who is one of accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots cases, claimed that “Muzaffarnagar” had been given its name by a nawab named Muzaffar Ali and that there has been a demand for long to change its name. “Keeping in mind the sentiments, the culture which was destroyed by invaders, we are trying to restore it. I do not think there is anything wrong in it,” Som told mediapersons.
Alleging that the Opposition is only doing “dikhava” (show-off), Som said, “Names of many cities are to be changed… Muzaffarnagar’s name is to be changed… Muzaffarnagar should be changed to Lakshmi Nagar, this has been demand of people for long.” He said the Opposition should clarify its stand on the change of names of Faizabad or Allahabad and added that they are not protesting against it because “even they know the BJP’s move is right”.
“All I want to say is that Mughals have worked to destroy our culture, especially destroy Hindutva. We are just trying to save the culture. BJP would move forward in this direction,” he said.
So far, the state government has already changed the name of Allahabad to “Prayagraj”, claiming that it was not a name change but a “restoration” of the original name.
On the eve of Diwali, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced at a Deepotsav event in Ayodhya that the name of Faizabad would be changed to “Ayodhya”.
