Uproar over no-trust move, Rajya Sabha adjourned

To do so is contempt of the House and the Chairman. This has been specified clearly”.

Rajya Sabha witnessed multiple disruptions and adjourned for the day Thursday afternoon after heated exchanges between the Treasury and Opposition benches over a gamut of issues.

Referring to the press conference held a day before by Opposition MPs on no-trust notice, Leader of House J P Nadda said, “The Chair cannot be questioned with regard to the admissibility, and for other purposes, the Chairman’s ruling cannot be criticised or questioned. To do so is contempt of the House and the Chairman. This has been specified clearly”.

Nadda then said, “What is the relationship between Sonia Gandhi and Soros? The country wants to know.”

Dhankhar said, “Have you come to the Business Advisory Committee? Have you accepted my invitation?”, sparking an uproar from the Opposition following which the House was adjourned till 2 pm.

After the House reconvened amid sloganeering, Dhankhar allowed TMC MP Derek O’Brien to raise a point of order under Rule 251. However, his point was not placed on record even amid uproar.

Senior JD(S) leader H D Deve Gowda stood up to speak and raised the issue of no-trust motion and said “it should not have happened”. He alleged that Kharge’s “colleagues are not allowing the House to function”.

Kharge then raised a point of order under Rule 238(a), which said that allegations of “incriminatory nature” against any member cannot be allowed in the House. Dhankhar repeatedly asked him what the point of order was and adjourned the House till 11 am on December 13.
