Tripura woman arrested for cross-border trafficking of Bangladeshis, Rohingya

A joint team of security forces on Tuesday arrested a woman allegedly involved in cross-border trafficking of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya, from Matinagar in Sepahijala district along the Indo-Bangla international border.
Speaking to reporters, Government Railway Police officer in-charge at Agartala railway station Tapas Das said, “A case was registered at the GRP police station on March 30 over the arrest of 30 Bangladeshi nationals. Several people were remanded in police custody for investigation. Based on inputs from mobile phones seized from the arrested and the Bangladeshi nationals, we found out that one Parul Akhter from Matinagar was heavily involved with these cases.”

“She was absconding. We came to learn from our sources that she returned home last night. GRP, Tripura Police from Amtali station and the Border Security Force (BSF) laid ambush near her house and arrested her after sunrise as per law,” Das added.
“She used to assist Bangladeshi citizens and Rohingya to cross the international border and even harboured them. Her residence is located right beside the border fence,” he said.
The woman is being interrogated to find out if anyone else is involved in the operations. “If we find anyone else is involved, we shall take appropriate legal actions against them as well. We are identifying those who are trying to use Agartala railway station for human trafficking, and arresting them one by one,” the GRP official said.

On March 23, seven Bangladeshi nationals who illegally crossed into Indian territory were arrested at Agartala railway station in Badharghat as they were about to board a train to Chennai. Three Rohingya people were also arrested in March from the railway station while they were trying to board a train to Hyderabad, in addition to several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya arrested over the last few months.
