A local court in North Tripura district has issued a death sentence to two persons for raping and murdering a minor girl in 2019.

Speaking to the media, Public Prosecutor (PP) Sudarshan Sharma said Special Judge Angshuman Debbarma Tuesday issued death sentence to the accused who are both residents of North Tripura district.

On May 17, 2019, the victim’s mother had filed a missing person’s complaint after her daughter did not return home that day. The girl was found dead the next day at a tea estate.

Sub-inspector Sanchita Raha, who conducted the inquiry, filed the chargesheet on November 28, 2019 and charged the accused duo under Sections 363 (kidnapping), 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and 201 (destroying evidence) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, following which, they stood an open trial.

Both the accused persons were apprehended and they confessed to their crimes during the interrogation.

Forensic samples corroborated the chain of events, after which the special judge sentenced them to death penalty and life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for each of the charges on each of the accused. If the duo fails to pay the fine amounts, the jail terms would be increased by six months. All punishments would run concurrently.
