In a first for Northeast India, Tripura has pioneered the use of artificial intelligence for greater digital inclusion by adopting state-of-the-art text-to-speech technology under the BHASHINI initiative, government officials said.
The technological integration formally started with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Department of Information Technology and the Digital India Bhashini Division of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in Agartala on Tuesday.
The MoU is in continuation of the BHASHINI project launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2022 under the National Language Technology Mission. The initiative aims to provide translation services in 22 scheduled Indian languages to break through linguistic barriers and enable people to access digital services smoothly.
A workshop on “Bhashini Rajyam” was held as part of the initiative, focusing on the potential of artificial intelligence and natural language processing for real-time translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech and voice-to-voice communication between Indian regional languages and English.
An official associated with the AI integration initiative said the MoU is expected to promote digital inclusion by addressing the digital and literacy divide among people. The workshop facilitated discussions on strategising the integration of regional languages into digital platforms and various e-governance utilities for easier public service delivery.
The BHASHINI project is designed to integrate technological advancements in governance with multiple language integration, fostering national integration and creating a more inclusive society by adopting artificial intelligence tools.
