A division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday handed out life sentences to two members of Kerala’s ruling CPI(M) in connection with the 2012 murder of party rebel leader T P Chandrasekharan. They had previously been acquitted by the trial court, but the acquittal was quashed last week by the High Court.

The High Court also increased the quantum of punishment for nine others who the trial court had sentenced to life in the case. The nine, including seven members of a gang hired to kill Chandrasekharan, have now been sentenced to a double life term.

Moreover, taking into consideration reports from prison authorities that the convicted gang members had indulged in crimes and anti-social activities during parole, the High Court also directed that they not be granted parole in the future.

The division Bench of Justices A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Kauser Edappagath had last week set aside the acquittal of local CPI(M) leaders K K Krishnan and Geothi Babu by the trial court. The High Court had also upheld the life sentence of 11 others, including three other party leaders. One of the convicted CPI(M) leaders, P K Kunhanandan, had died in 2020 while serving his jail term.

K K Rama, Chandrasekharan’s wife and now a legislator backed by the Opposition UDF, had pointed out that the convicted gangsters and CPI(M) leaders were getting parole on many occasions since the party came to power in the state in 2016. The court last week had asked the prison department to produce a report regarding the nature of the work done by the convicts in jail, and also a psychological and psychiatric evaluation report of nine of them.
