The Centre withdrew the Special Protection Group (SPG) security cover given to the Gandhi family Friday. They will now be provided with CRPF Z-plus cover instead. The decision to provide the type of protection is taken by the Home Ministry based on inputs from intelligence agencies, which include the Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing (RA&W). The move comes months after former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s SPG security cover was withdrawn. Read more
Only a day before the corridor to Kartarpur Sahib across the border opens to the pilgrims, Pakistan’s government on Friday conveyed to India that it will charge $20 facilitation fee from each pilgrim using the Kartarpur Corridor to visit the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib on Saturday. Last week, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced that no fee would be charged from the pilgrims on the opening day of the corridor and on Sikhism founder Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary on November 12. Under fire for some of its policies, Twitter is facing an exodus of sorts in India. The social network has been criticised for bias, after senior advocate Sanjay Hegde’s account was suspended from the platform. Twitter has indicated it will not be restoring Hegde’s account, and also put out a statement defending itself. The end result has been that some of the most vociferous voices on Twitter India are calling for a boycott of the platform. What’s more, they are all joining a ‘new’ social network Mastodon. Global ratings agency Moody’s Investors Service Friday cut its outlook on the Government of India’s ratings to negative from stable, but affirmed the Baa2 foreign-currency and local-currency long-term issuer ratings. Moody’s also affirmed India’s Baa2 local-currency senior unsecured rating and its P-2 other short-term local-currency rating. Read more
Rishabh Pant’s performance in every match has been closely scrutinised since he took Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s spot in the team. So when an error cost India a crucial first wicket in the second T20I against Bangladesh, Indian fans flooded Twitter with memes and jokes about the wicketkeeper. Yuzvendra Chahal had beaten Bangladesh’s Liton Das, and Pant whipped off the bails to stump the opener. However, the umpire ruled it not out since Pant caught the ball before it crossed the stumps, a violation of the rule for stumpings. India have been named as the host country for 2023 FIH Men’s World Cup, which is scheduled to be held from January 13, 2023, till January 29, 2023. The decision was taken by the Executive Board of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in the last annual meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday. On the other hand, Spain and the Netherlands have been selected to co-host the 2022 FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup. It will take place from July 1, 2022, till July 17, 2022. Read more
