The Civil Aviation Ministry is considering random psychoactive substance tests for all commercial pilots throughout the year, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said on Tuesday. The DGCA is consulting stakeholders on strengthening the existing testing regime, under which 10% of pilots and air traffic controllers are randomly tested annually. The move comes after the captain of an Air India Phuket-Delhi flight involved in a sudden 300-foot altitude loss on August 4 tested positive for marijuana.

The State Investigation Agency (SIA) has reopened investigation into the 1998 Wandhama massacre where 23 Kashmiri Pandits were brutally murdered in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district, officials said on Tuesday.
The reopening of the Wandhama massacre case comes as the SIA has re-launched investigation into several cases involving the murder of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley.
Officials said the investigation seeks to identify the terrorists and the persons who assisted them, and establish their role in the Wandhama killings.
On January 25, 1998, terrorists entered homes of Kashmiri Pandit families in Wandhama village of the central Kashmir's Ganderbal district and killed 23 people, including nine women and four children.

Four people were arrested in connection with the killing of a BJP worker in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Sunday in North Tagar Baria following a dispute between two groups over the formation of a Durga Puja committee, they said.
Bapi Pramanik was rescued in a seriously injured condition and rushed to the Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, they added.
"Pramanik's wife was present at the spot when the altercation broke out. He was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons in front of her, according to the complaint lodged by his family," an officer said.
Those arrested were identified as Sujan Mondal, Krishna Mondal, Kanak Mondal and Anil Naya, police said. PTI
The Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday appointed an Inquiring Authority to probe charges against suspended IPS officer N Sanjay over alleged misappropriation and misuse of public funds.
Sanjay has been accused of misappropriation and misuse of public funds in the work, development and maintenance of the AGNI (Automated Governance & NoC Integration) web portal, besides other alleged irregularities, while serving as director general of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response & Fire Services.
He has been accused of misappropriating funds allocated for training police personnel to create awareness among members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes about the rights of victims and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, while serving as additional director general of police in the CID. Sushant Kulkarni from Pune reports that on August 21, a 24-year-old delivery executive was kidnapped near Gahunje Stadium in Pune, assaulted with a machete, and robbed of Rs 90,000 in cash. The Pimpri Chinchwad police have arrested six habitual offenders in connection with the armed robbery and seized property worth Rs 1.8 lakh, including the autorickshaw allegedly used in the crime. While the victim was hospitalised with a head injury and the suspects have been handed over to the Talegaon Dabhade police for further investigation, the stolen cash has yet to be recovered.

Jairam Ramesh said Congress has sent its third letter to PM Modi on the caste census, signed by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.
"Both leaders have written a letter, and the subject is the caste census. This is the third letter from the Congress party to the Prime Minister on the caste census. The first letter was written by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to the Prime Minister on April 16, 2023, regarding the caste census. After that, the Congress president wrote a second, lengthy two-page letter on May 5, 2025, also regarding the caste census, and offered some suggestions, including constructive ones. That letter was sent to the Prime Minister. Unfortunately, neither of these two letters received any response from the Prime Minister, the Prime Minister's Office, the Home Minister or any official. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, on Tuesday (Aug 25), said that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) was investigating the Air India Delhi-Phuket flight incident and is expected to submit a preliminary report at an early stage.
“The AAIB is presently conducting the investigation. Since everything is intact, the data recorder and other relevant evidence, and the aircraft remains in the investigators’ possession, I believe we can expect a preliminary report at an early stage. More importantly, with regard to substance use and related issues, the DGCA is currently holding consultations with stakeholders to review the existing regulations and determine how we can ensure a stricter policy in the future. These consultations are currently underway,” Kinjarapu said.
“There are multiple ways of approaching drug testing. At present, the rules require testing 10 per cent of the overall pilot population. However, as I said, the DGCA is engaging with stakeholders, and one of the views from our side is that every pilot should undergo testing at least once a year at a random time,” he added.
The Calcutta High Court has directed that no coercive action be taken against TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in FIRs registered against him, holding that custodial interrogation was not required.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharya protected Banerjee from coercive action till November 30, or until further orders.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within two weeks, The Indian Express has learnt.
According to an email sent to students by IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee this morning, the committee will investigate the circumstances leading to Kumar’s death and review relevant records relating to students, faculty and the administration, as well as protocols and processes, before making recommendations.
The constitution of the committee comes a day after students gathered at the institute demanding accountability from the administration following the death of 31-year-old Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the sixth floor of a building on campus on Saturday.

According to the spokesperson, the accused had attempted a sophisticated Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against 54 websites of Government of India entities during the time of Operation Sindoor last year.
“The websites targeted included critical computer resources and critical information infrastructure, with the intent to compromise national sovereignty, security and unity, and to incite public fear. Two accused have already been arrested in the case, which was originally registered by the Gujarat ATS,” the spokesperson said.
